“Cycling is my way of maintaining my sanity while I’m trying to juggle all this other ‘stuff’,” says Janis Denning, a busy mom of three and a full-time physician’s assistant at the Oregon Clinic. Beginning in the early 90’s, Janis started bicycling first as an economical transportation method, but soon began racing mountain bikes and running competitively. After a move and the usual time constraints that motherhood brings, Janis got serious about cycling on the trainer, and a friend introduced her to Sufferfest and Zwift. “The group rides are so fun and really motivating. A friend suggested that I try a race, and I was hooked.”
Impressed by her Zwift Racing output, CVR officials invited Janis to attend and compete in the CVR World Cup in Las Vegas, where Janis put out a solid effort, securing the 2nd place win in the race. “I was thrilled to bits to be able to attend at all, and then to actually do well was exciting. My kids were most impressed by the trophy!” Janis’ greatest takeaway from the CVR World Cup experience was connecting with the other athletes. “Even getting set-up, everyone was so nice and encouraging. The male racers were making sure all of the ladies were set up correctly and ready to go.”
What happened next is a snowball of activity that has opened up Janis’ cycling world. Shortly after her return home, Team Vision Zwift team reached out to her and asked if she’d like to join their team. “I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to commit, but it turns out you can do as many or as little races as you like. They’re really funny and entertaining people in that group.”
She was also interviewed by ZwiftBlog and was featured as one of the first “ZwiftHers” series about women who cycle on Zwift.
Shortly thereafter, she got a message via a Facebook group she belongs to from a local rider, and was invited to join their women’s team for real-life races. “I continue to get race invitations, it’s kind of overwhelming, my community has grown so much in this short period of time.”
“It’s really given me a new faith in humanity, being a part of this community. There are so many nice, wonderful people out there. My universe has gotten a little better.”

“My family thinks I’m a little nuts, but they have been so supportive. My 12 year old races on Zwift now too.” Janis lives in Oregon with her husband and three boys, 12, 9 and 6.
